Wheels within wheels…recantations within recantations…a frame within a frame? Marathon Pundit is all over the latest news about the Anthony Porter/Alstory Simon murder case.
I don’t have much to say about the death penalty—I am as disturbed by the blood lust on one side as by the candlelight vigils for murderers on the other—but this is a bizarre story.
Somebody shot and killed Marilyn Green and Jerry Hillard on Chicago’s south side in 1982. A witness identified Anthony Porter as the shooter. He was arrested, tried, convicted by a jury, and sentenced to death.
In 1999, Alstory Simon confessed to the killing. Anthony Porter was released and all charges were dropped. Alstory Simon pleaded guilty and is currently serving a 37.5-year sentence.
Anthony Porter sued the City of Chicago for wrongful arrest and lost last month.
Now Alstory Simon has recanted his confession, and one of the witnesses against him has changed her story.
I have no idea what’s going on. My gut feeling is that the right man is now in jail, but I probably would have said exactly the same thing when it was the other guy.
