As a libertarian of sorts, I naturally lean towards an all-but-open-borders immigration policy, but I’ve been trying to educate myself in some of the details, so I appreciate hearing from you that I didn’t get too much wrong. My gut feeling is that not much of significance will happen with immigration reform, although I think things might get a little bit better.

It is clear to me, as a lawyer who practices in the field, that his advisors on this issue have little understanding of how the present law works and what the major problems are. When you consider that besides the White House proposal, there are also conflicting proposals in the House and Senate, the chance that a truly effective and realistic reform of the present system will take effect is not very realistic. There are still thousands of cases from the 1986 amnesty program still kicking around which gives an indication of what lies ahead with whatever changes come from the current proposals.
