<i>"The tactics are problematic too. Your examples of police luring a suspect outside rather than assaulting the house is an issue of tactics."</i>

True. However, when police are questioned about these tactics, they eventually claim that that dynamic entry is needed to preserve evidence. Luring a mad bomber to the door may work, but---at least for now---I'm willing to believe that the cops are right about it not working very well on organized drug crews.

In any case, I don't know enough about police work to confidently dispute the necessity of dynamic entry, given what police are trying to achieve. But I do feel comfortable asserting that whatever they're trying to do, it's not worth it.

"My objection is not about SWAT tactics, it's about the SWAT mission."

The tactics are problematic too. Your examples of police luring a suspect outside rather than assaulting the house is an issue of tactics.

"They are pretty much trained to not shoot untill they see movement."

Assuming the kid is right -- shoot at anything that moves -- then that would be a pretty good reason not to use SWAT teams unless the goal was to kill everyone inside. Clearly the kid is wrong. Even though I think there is a serious concern about SWAT tactics and SWAT missions, it isn't THIS bad.

I have to agree with you, Mark. I live two blocks from the cop shop in downtown Des Plaines, IL. It's a nice, quiet area, as you are aware. One Saturday morning this past summer I awoke to six SWAT team members in front of my building and four behind. What for? I'm guessing my former downstairs neighbor went FTA on some minor drug dealing charge.

Now, there were no doors broken down. No weapons discharged. However, there were high-powered weapons and tactical gear in abundance.

Did I want the jerk out of the building? You bet. But was this overkill, to say the least.
