Really? Just about everyone that I have known that come from south of the border refer to “Americans” as norteamericanos (North Americans) when they are feeling nice, and gringos when they are not.

On the one hand, it seems rude to usurp the term “American” just for citizens of the United States. It’s our tough luck that there’s no convenient adjective form of the name. On the other hand, I’ve seen numerous other inhabitants of the American continents refer to us as “Americans.” I gave up trying to use anything else a long time ago.
